HSC was tasked with creating a fresh office environment for Link Engineering, who were soon to be moving from a neighbouring shared office space just a few doors away in Central Birmingham. The original space was a blank canvas, complete with an existing kitchen, lighting, carpeting, and even Astroturf, all of which were to be preserved in the refurbishment design.
The design objectives were deliberately understated yet designed to make a significant impact on the growing team of 20+ employees at the company. Our task involved transforming a sizable meeting room into a more intimate setting for private discussions, providing adaptable options to accommodate additional workstations as the company continued to expand in the coming years, and, most importantly, creating a dedicated breakout area to encourage employees to step away from their desks during lunch breaks, casual meetings, and social interactions, ultimately enhancing their overall well-being in the workplace.
While we explored initial concepts for the breakout area involving enclosed spaces, we encouraged a more open and free-flowing layout. This approach allowed for informal company meetings with flexible seating arrangements, a presentation screen, and the incorporation of the existing Astroturf to infuse an element of playfulness into the space. Additionally, we proposed the installation of feature pendant lighting above a sharing high table within the kitchen area to add character to the breakout zone, and we incorporated ample opportunities for the client to fill the space with plants and greenery, aligning with their brand colours and promoting well-being by improving oxygen levels within the workspace.
